GRANDMA NAI WHO PLAYED FAVORITES (2025) DIR. CHHEANGKEA​

Love and support sometimes come from the place you least expect it and when urgent, one must act, even from the afterworld. Meng is a queer young man about to be married to a girl from a respectable family but when his dead grandmother sees her favorite grandson being forced into a life that isn't his, she decides to help the best way she can. A tender drama that blends tradition, karaoke and humor to explore queer Cambodian hopes and (fantastical) realities.

WILL YOU LOOK AT ME (2022)  

DIR. SHULI HUANG

This deeply personal experimental documentary short by Chinese filmmaker Shuli Huang is a quest for love: love of oneself and the love of family. After studying abroad, the filmmaker returns to his hometown of Wenzhou where traditional family values make any conversation about his queerness a near mission impossible. Near impossible, because Shuli Huang’s subtle yet resolute attempt to have his mother really look at him (and love him) for what he is turns into a breathtaking visual and emotional exercise in love and compassion.

SUNDAY (2020)

DIR. ARUN FULARA

The weekly highlight of a middle-aged man’s life is going to the barber shop on Sundays to get a shave and some tender care from the handsome barber he has a secret crush on. Surrounded by an unforgiving  heteronormative world, his desire allows for no more than platonic queer longing and a moment of daring fantasy: imagining himself without a mustache because someone he likes told him that it would look amazing. This beautifully shot short with a soulful performance by Shrikant Yadav as Kamble captures the sensuous intimacy of a barber shop encounter and closeted queer longing.

WE’LL GO DOWN IN HISTORY (2025)

A heartfelt documentary about TRUK United, a UK  football club for trans and non-binary players. Through candid conversations with the players, coach, and rising talents, the film explores the realities of increasing transphobia alongside the safety and belonging the club provides. “When you got football in your feet, you forget about everything else in the world.” This inspiring documentary is a testament to the resilience of the trans community and the power of belonging.

ADULT (2017)

DIR. JAMIESON PIERCE

Based on a short story by Christos Tsiolkas (Merciless Gods, 2014), this poignant short set in the ‘90’s follows a grieving mother trying to reconnect with the memory of her gay son and to forgive herself for denouncing him. Never moralizing or judging, the filmmaker tells a nuanced story of parallel truths and lives trying to hold on to each other across the divide.

A Ferris wheel ride of emotions as two old friends reconnect on a hot, festive night on the streets of Kolkata. Past and present collide as the night spreads its wings and unspoken feelings gradually surface. A subtle study about the volatility of time and memory and the quiet yet formative permanence of feelings and human connections.

BABA (2021)

This Iris Prize winning short explores what it means to be Arab, Muslim and queer in Libya.  It follows Britannia, a queer Libyan teen who lives with his chosen family in the tunnels beneath Tripoli and dreams of being queer in the UK. When he finally gets an asylum interview at the British Embassy, he needs to sneak back home to get his passport, but what he finds is more than just the document that he needs to leave. He also discovers something that makes him want to stay.

DOUBLE SEXY (2019)

An exhilarating look at the underground party scene of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, China. This pulsating yet intimate short follows the regulars of an underground club called Funky Town over one weekend. Skaters, DJs, drag performers, and floaters get wild, fall in love, explore their sexuality, and throw up if they must, while holding on to each other through neon-lit nights and bleak mornings. This short is a prequel to Ben Mullinkosson’s feature length documentary, The Last Year of Darkness (2023).

CHRISTOPHER AT SEA (2022)

A surreal journey of queer desire and fantasy, this animated short follows a young man as he navigates his emotions and fears literally and figuratively at sea. Christopher embarks on a transatlantic voyage as a passenger on a cargo ship where his encounter with a ship crew lures him into a dreamlike world of erotic fantasy and obsession. A visually singular work, this short animation submerges into Christopher’s inner turmoil as he slowly descends into the surreal realm of his desires and fears.

KUMU HINA (2014)

The inspiring story of Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, a transgender (Māhū) Native Hawaiian (Kānaka Maoli) teacher and cultural icon who brings to life Hawaii’s long-held embrace of māhū - those who embody both male and female spirit, and were/are traditionally respected as caretakers, healers, and keepers of ancient traditions.

ILI-ILI / LITTLE ONE (2023)

DIR. CLISTER SANTOS

A heartfelt animation about a Filipino same-sex couple whose pregnant daughter wants to learn more about her dads’ journey becoming her parents. The interview takes a fateful turn, but it also becomes the catalyst of memories of a childhood full of precious memories and loving care. Evocative of home movies, the visuals were inspired by Filipino painter Fernando Amorsolo and  Ili-Ili from the title comes from a Filipino-Ilongo language lullaby called "Ili ili tulog anay" - go to sleep little one.

A spicy comedy about Nikki, a sassy trans girl who, in her quest to afford her breast augmentation surgery, takes a job at her estranged mother’s struggling tofu restaurant in LA’s Koreatown. Austria Wang is nothing short of fabulous in the role of Nikki as she navigates her dreams and realities in her mom’s restaurant and beyond. An endearing story about mothers and daughters, spicy tofu and staying true to who you are.

APAYAUQ (2023)  

DIR. ZEPPELIN ZEERIP

An inspiring documentary about Apayauq Reitan, Indigenous Inupiaq transgender woman (Aġnainġiq) and dog musher who became the first out transgender woman to complete the legendary Iditarod sled dog race across Alaska, USA. The filmmaker followed Apayauq for more than 1,000 miles on the Iditarod trail, documenting her journey from Anchorage to Nome, a trying challenge of unforgiving yet breathtaking terrain. In a hostile anti-trans climate, Apayauq Reitan’s resolve and resilience celebrates Indigenous roots and practices while being unapologetically yourself.

IF I DIE IN AMERICA  (2023)

After the sudden death of his immigrant husband, a young American man is grappling with loss, grief, and time as his late husband’s family wants to fly the body back to Kuwait for the funeral which -  according to tradition - has to happen within 24 hours of death. A poignant short about tradition, the right to grieve, and the agency of a body in the backdrop of complex emotional, cultural, and political circumstances.

The roller-coaster journey of a young man who learns he is HIV positive. Following a whirlwind of fear and abandon, this soulful animated short dives (literally) into Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights to take a trip from heaven to hell and back again to find hope and self-love despite it all. A visually singular animated queer gem from Brazil about living with HIV and embracing life.

EGÚNGÚN / MASQUERADE (2021) 

DIR. OLIVE NWOSU

A poignant short about a young woman who returns from London to her ancestral village in Nigeria for the funeral of her mother. She finds old dreams and loves, but also traumas and lies in the place where she grew up. Egúngún means masquerade: it is roots and tradition. It is also layering and masquerading - the hiding that societal norms and pressures impose on people’s feelings and lives. Beautifully photographed with subtly intense performances, this soulful short is the physical and emotional journey of two women reconnecting in space and time, past and present and egúngún.

AIKĀNE (2023)

A beautifully animated queer Pacific Islander story from the creators of  Kapaemahu about a wounded warrior who falls into the ocean, is rescued by an octopus who transforms into a young man and the two become aikāne - intimate friends and companions of the same sex. Aikāne skillfully weaves queer Pacific Islander stories into the fabric of world cinema.

THE ORPHAN / O ÓRFÃO (2018) 

DIR. CAROLINA MARKOWICZ

This Cannes Queer Palm winning short was inspired by true events and follows the story of Jonathas, a young Brazilian orphan navigating the adoption system, traditional family “rules” and his burgeoning sexuality. Adopted and returned multiple times, Jonathas’ sexuality and mannerisms are unwelcome by the adoptive families. Despite the devastating effects of rejection, Jonathas’ story is an inspiring tribute to the resilience and bravery of queer children.

Kauan Alvarenga’s arresting performance as Jonathas is a must see tour de force.
